Available data support the relationship between endocannabinoid signaling and circadian processes (Vaugn, et al 2010) and suggest that the endocannabinoid system has the ability to modulate circadian rhythms.
When our endocannabinoid systems are activated by either internal or external cannabinoids such as CBD, CBN or THC, they appear to trigger a number of therapeutic responses in our body. These include sedation, anxiolytic effects, neuroprotection, neurogenesis or new brain cell formation, anti-inflammatory effects, pain relief, increased metabolism, feelings of well-being and a positive impact on depression-related neurotransmitter serotonin levels. THC and sleep
Although the link between cannabinoids and the sleep cycle was established decades ago, it has been limited by our incomplete understanding of cannabis and its components. In the 1970s, preliminary research focused mainly on THC and marijuana. This early research involved several studies examining polysomnography-based sleep (PSG). Polysomnography, a diagnostic tool in sleep medicine, is a type of sleep study that records brain waves, blood oxygen levels, heart rate and respiration, as well as leg and eye movements.
Still other works on THC from 70-80-s period found a decrease in slow-wave sleep latency, an increase in slow-wave sleep, and an increase in total sleep time. Slow wave sleep, or SWS, refers to phase 3 of the sleep cycle. Although SWS sleep plays an important role in memory consolidation, the deepest phase of sleep is non-rapid eye movement (NREM). Sleepiness and dreaming can occur during SWS.
As the understanding of cannabis and its components by the research community has become more sophisticated and various effects of different cannabinoids have been discovered, sleep research has revived focusing on cannabinoid types (THC vs. CBD), cannabinoid ratio, timing and route of administration. which have been shown to play a key role in the results.
CBD and sleep
In 1981, Carlini and Cunha published a study of CBD in individuals with insomnia. They showed that administration of 160 mg / day of CBD resulted in a prolongation of total sleep time and a reduction in the frequency of nocturnal arousal. Although their study showed that CBD reduced dream induction, they did not find CBD that would cause a “hangover.”
In 2004, Nicholson and colleagues published a pilot study in humans that showed that high doses of CBD were associated with improved sleep. Furthermore, in contrast to the use of THC as a sleep aid, which studies have shown the next day’s memory impairment, as well as increased drowsiness and mood swings, CBD does not appear to lead to these negative side effects.
In a 2012 study of the effect of medium and high doses of CBD in rats, Hsiao and colleagues found that CBD blocks REM-induced sleep suppression and increases the percentage of total sleep time. Similarly, in 2013, Chagas and colleagues published a study that found an increase in the overall percentage of sleep in rats after a medium dose.
